Canada set for mass seal hunting

Previous seal hunts have provoked international outrage
The largest single seal hunt in half a century begins in Canada on Monday.
The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed this year, many of them in a 36-hour mass cull.

The hunting of young seals for their fur almost stopped off Canada's east coast 25 years ago in the face of international outrage.

Animal rights groups are hoping to sway international opinion against the hunt, but Canadian officials say it is now both humane and necessary.

The seal hunt in Newfoundland and Labrador withered 25 years ago as brutal images of men clubbing infant seals horrified the world.

THE CULL
Up to 350,000 baby harp seals to be killed this season
Preliminary culls started at the beginning of April
2,500 men and 150 trawlers to gather for intensive 36-hour phase of cull on 12 April
Up to 10,000 seals to be killed per daylight hour
Killing of "whitecoat" seals - aged up to 12 days - banned
The US banned imports of seal products in 1972 and the EU followed suit a decade later with a ban on white pelt imports, taken from the youngest babies.

As a result, the Canadian government reduced quotas for seal hunting to as low as 15,000 annually - mainly for meat and local handicraft.

But with fur again in fashion the hunt is back.

Last year Canada increased the quotas again, allowing a million seals to be killed over the next three years.

It is now being conducted under tighter regulations and most seals are now shot, not clubbed, but the number of animals expected to be taken this year will be the highest in decades and once again it is drawing international attention.

Hard to convince

At the weekend, Canadian Natural Resources Minister John Efford said many claims made overseas about the hunt are simply wrong.

He says the hunt is more humane than ever while the seal population is exploding and commercial fish stocks in the region are vanishing.

But the BBC's Ian Gunn in Vancouver, Canada, says against images of dying seals that can be a hard argument to make convincing.

The Canadian tourism commission admitted last week they are keeping an eye open for an international backlash should the protests gather strength.

Officials estimate there are 5.2 million harp seals in the north Atlantic currently.

Guidelines 'ignored'

Far from being endangered, the seals are responsible for the depletion of cod stocks, they say.

Society girl Paris Hilton joins the campaign
Animal rights groups accuse officials of "attempting to scapegoat seals" for their own fisheries mismanagement.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) also says government guidelines on humane hunting methods are being ignored.

"We filmed and witnessed seals being skinned alive right in front of us," Ifaw activist Rebecca Aldworth told Reuters news agency last week.

"We saw live seals being dragged while conscious across the ice with boat hooks, we saw stockpiles of dead and dying seals, it was really horrific."

Another group, the US-based Humane Society, is taking full-page adverts in prominent American newspapers to urge for a travel boycott on Canada.

They also designed shirts reading "Club Sandwiches Not Seals".

..Funny how the seals didn't manage to fuk up the cod stocks over the last million years, innit.
The cod stocks are all fukked up over here in europe too, not too many seals here tho.

It can't be the fishermen...
I blame GWB, it must be his fault...

2500 guys handling 10,000 seals an hour at the peak of the killing.. a bloodbath or wot.

Why should anyone give a shit eek? How many cows, chickens, and pigs are slaughtered everyday for human consumption? What makes a seal any different? I guess seals are cute and they probably sing show tunes Disney-style out on the ice flows.

It makes my stomach churn to see celebrity jerkoffs like Paris Hilton back this as an animal rights issue. There are real people and real families who depend on the seal hunt for their living. The fish are gone and now that they've found another way to provide for their families, and the dignity of working for a living, people want to take it away because it's cruel to the seal? Just once I'd like to see one of these wretched celebrities actually demonstrate concern for an unfashionable cause like say, the quality of life and economic prospects of people in our own economically depressed communities.

Are harp seals remotely endangered? No
Do scientists agree they are affecting cod stocks? Yes
Is GreenPeace against the current cull? No
Are regulations in place to assure that seals experience a minimum of suffering? Yes
Do thousands of families depend on this industry to live? Yes

Now what the fukk is the problem again?

People should give a shit because it is disgusting.

And I agree with you about the why don't people care about chickens,pigs,etc...I became a vegetarian/pretty close to vegan 2 years ago and I cannot believe that i used to eat animals.

Anyway , I do not see the point of killing animals for fur. It is disgusting. And what kind of person would go club a little animal to death? Hopefully while they are out clubbing a seal someone is at their home clubbing their family.

There's nothing worse than someone foisting their warped moral viewpoint on the rest of the world, whether it's fundamentalist religion, or vegetarianism/veganism, or whatever. Good for you if you're vegetarian - it's your choice to make. However most people see nothing wrong with eating animals, wearing leather, etc... and in fact animals eating other animals seems to go on quite a bit in nature if I recall correctly. BTW seals are not killed only for their fur . . . seal oil is used for nutritional supplements and cosmetics, and the penises are used for asian aphrodisiacs.

Hey Mr NJ . . . next time you are murdering lettuce and carrots for your lunch I hope a tree falls on your house and crushes your family.

Whether you are for or against killing, eating, wearing animals is irrelevant. What is relevant is that animals have rights and are protected under laws.

The right to life is not one of the so-called 'animal rights' that is protected under Canadian law . . . or any other country's law that I am aware of.

If its a legal seal hunt then there is nothing wrong with it, especially when lawmakers are liberal as in Canada.

Next time i should the article before I comment on it.

I once tried to get all my protein from beans, soy powders, and grains. Though it helped me get down to around 5% body fat, I lost so much strength that my bench and squat dropped about 25%. I envy the skinny vegans to a point, but I will never be able to give up burgers, brisket, ribs, bbq'd chicken, tenderloin, brats, or any fish or seafood.
I can't even imagine going to a restaraunt and ordering a sauteed slice tofu on my baby greens... for the love of god.

Angus,

That was too funny. I regret laughing at it because of it's nature but I couldn't help it.

Let's face it, it's all pretty much cultural.

But let me the first supposed 'liberal' in here to say, Yum Yum, Gimmee Another Whopper with Cheese.

Oh, and fried bird embryos for breakfast with slices of pig.

Vegetables are not murdered for food.

I did not come in here to foist my vegetarianism on anyone. In my opinion someone that would go to club a seal or go hunting is a coward bastard. I do not go out and try to recruit other vegetarians, i was expressing my opinion. You were expressing your opinion i did not accuse you of foisting your warped lack of civility on the rest of us.
I know that animals eat other animals but that is their instincts, It is not a humans instinct to see an animal and then just chase it kill it and eat it in the middle of the wilderness.

Angus said /"seal oil is used for nutritional supplements and cosmetics, and the penises are used for asian aphrodisiacs." /

Do you slap yourself in the face with the seal penis to get you going angus?

If you and people like you attempt to shut down a legal and sustainable seal hunt for no other reason than that you have a problem with humans killing animals then you are foisting your viewpoint on the rest of us and wreaking economic havoc for thousands of economically downtrodden families.

Yes it is. How do you think humans survived before the advent of agriculture? Do you think we ate manna from heaven? Did forest creatures carry fruits and berries to us as we sat around eating hallucinogenic mushrooms and smoking weed?

From what I understand the Chinese dry the penises out and crush them into powder. This powder is then used to prepare a tea that is consumed in order to increase the sex drive. I've never tried it but I don't think any slapping is involved.

If someone and his family are so downtrodden that they need to beat seals to earn a living maybe they should just club themselves to death.

Vegetarianism is actually a totally different argument than clubbing the piss out of seals. I actually do not find it as an argument, If you wanna eat meat fine I do not. No big deal to me.

Also, Asians also eat dogs ,so the fact that they slap the hell out of each other with seal penis to get all hot n bothered is irrelevant.

Also. what is manna? Honestly I do not know what that is.

I also enjoy the smoking weed assumption as I am the only non weed smoking,Aethiest, vegetarian, Republican I know.

Maybe aethist is the wrong word. I just know I do not believe in any god or any of that nonsense. I do know that beating the hell ot of an animal is not a nice thing to do.

I'm not going to hijack this thread with a tired old theological debate BUT...

...if you're an atheist, then you must believe that naturalism is true. If that's the case, then humans are simply part of that and not somehow apart from the natural world. So in a nutshell, humans killing off seals or destroying the the environment just is what it is and nothing more.

I believe in right from wrong and in my opinion it is wrong to club seals to death for basically no reason.

And to quote Ferris Bueller "I don't believe in isms I only believe in me"
